Carestream Health Unveils Newest Generation of RIS PACS(2)

Innovative Digital Tools Designed to Boost Productivity and Improve Radiology Workflow

VIENNA, March 6 — A new generation RIS/PACS platform from Carestream Health will offer advanced tools and features to streamline the delivery of imaging services and boost productivity. As part of its new PACS workstation the Company demonstrated an innovative “power viewer” that promises to speed exam interpretation and reporting for routine exams and 3D imaging studies where complex data sets need to be compared. This new capability provides automatic registration and volumetric matching of 3D studies created at different times and by different modalities directly within the viewer used by radiologists.

The new CARESTREAM RIS/PACS—shown as a work in progress at the European Congress of Radiology’s annual meeting this week—will be available worldwide in the second quarter of 2009.

Enhancements Can Improve Productivity, Communication

The company’s new Web-based CARESTREAM RIS is Microsoft® .NET connected to offer tremendous flexibility and scalability in a thin-client solution. Unique new scheduling capabilities will further improve radiology workflow and reduce the need for rescheduling:

  • A new feature will enable users to view the availability of all clinical staff required when scheduling an exam (radiologist, radiographer and/or nurse);
  • A one-step tool will allow entry of an exam order at the same time an exam and appointment are scheduled. The RIS also will support patient scheduling at multiple locations; and
  • An optional web portal will equip patients to change appointments to improve patient satisfaction while maximizing staff efficiency.

Integration with IBM’s Lotus® Sametime® technology will allow instant communication between staff members so radiologists can ask colleagues to address questions that may help in forming a diagnosis.

New PACS Features Speed Reading of Complex Exams

Native and advanced 3-D applications are embedded in the latest version of CARESTREAM PACS to eliminate the need for radiologists to use multiple workstations and facilitate a more efficient workflow.

New features for the PACS platform will include:

  • Real-time volume matching and automatic registration for CT, MR and PET/CT exams. This innovative capability speeds the comparison of current and prior cases by making it much faster and easier for radiologists to measure and compare tumors, nodules and other anatomical structures.
  • A power viewer that builds a single virtual study with real-time volume matching of all relevant studies (new and prior) to automatically register and synchronise them in one click.
  • New native PET/CT reading with full functionality for image manipulation including fusion, synchronised views, standard uptake value and volume matching comparison of current and prior cases.
  • Ability to save a 3-D view as a bookmark so that this view can be easily shared from a technologist to a radiologist or from a radiologist to a surgeon; and
  • Enhancements to volume rendering, bone or bed removal, vessel contours and other advanced functions.
