Carestream Health Awarded Prestigious Shingo Award For Second Consecutive Year

Honored for “Lean Manufacturing” in Rochester with Shingo Silver Medallion

ShingoROCHESTER, N.Y., March 30 — For the second consecutive year, Carestream Health, Inc., has won a Shingo Award for excellence in manufacturing, one of the highest honors bestowed on manufacturing companies. The company’s Rochester, N.Y., manufacturing facility achieved The Shingo Silver Medallion for superiority in “lean” manufacturing.

The Rochester facility, which makes approximately 70 percent of all dental X-ray film sold worldwide, uses lean manufacturing practices to optimize the quality and consistency of the product it delivers to customers while also enabling financial savings for the company. By committing to a “lean culture,” the facility is able to deliver goods and services with higher quality, fewer defects, and within shorter timelines than traditional production methods.

“Lean manufacturing methodology is all about creating more efficient processes that maximize the use of equipment, raw materials and personnel to create a better and more cost effective product,” said Ralph Olney, Chief Quality Officer, Carestream Health. “The skilled employees working at our Rochester manufacturing facility take these goals very seriously. We are honored to have their fine work recognized by such a prestigious, cross-industry signpost for operational excellence.”

The Shingo Silver Medallion is awarded to companies that demonstrate system-driven business transformation, and recognizes operational excellence in companies that have challenged traditional business paradigms in order to face the challenges of today’s global economy. Through its systematic implementation of lean principles, Carestream Health’s dental film manufacturing facility has achieved world-class results in the areas of product quality, productivity and environmental health and safety, among others.

“"We are the global leader in dental radiography film, with more than half a billion intra-oral film packets manufactured in our Rochester plant annually,” said Richard Hirschland, President, Dental Systems Group, Carestream Health. “A large contributor to our success is the team’s uncompromising commitment to lean manufacturing practices. This award is yet another example of that dedication.”

Carestream Health’s Guadalajara, Mexico and Colorado manufacturing facilities were honored with Shingo Awards in 2008. A Board of Examiners consisting of over 175 lean leaders throughout North America carry out the rigorous process of evaluating companies being considered for the award. Company representatives will accept the award at the Shingo National Awards ceremony in Nashville in early May.
